From childhood to the present, stories have leaked into my head. I lie in bed at night, twisting plots and shaping characters. I would get more sleep if I didn’t want to find out what happened next to the dramas playing behind closed eyelids.
I wrote my first story, “The Haunted Space Station,” in third grade. Stories came in fits and starts after that. Getting a PhD in environmental engineering pushed me toward science and technical writing. As an engineer, I wrote technical papers and grant applications. Those applications turned out to be great training for fiction: you have to create a coherent and plausible dream of something that doesn’t exist.
In the midst of juggling a demanding job and two small children, stories again flickered to life in my head, often stories about magic combined with science. We all have darkness inside us, and werewolves more than most humans. I was drawn to the tension between human and beast in inherent in werewolves and not satisfied with how werewolves were portrayed in fiction. So, I set off on a journey to discover how one werewolf made his way in the world, discovering his true nature and creating the family denied him as a child. Along the way, I threw in a few vampires and a bit of magic, because why not?
Over the last twenty-odd years, I completed a fantasy trilogy about a werewolf struggling to fit into contemporary America. The first two books, “Only the Moon Howls” and “The Wolf’s Den”, are available. The third book, “Blue Moon” will be out in November 2026.
